Civil Rights & Equality Movements
As was the case for many other cities in the South, San Antonio was an early and significant player in the civil rights movement. The city’s leaders took the lead in integrating its lunch counters, and a number of civil rights protests took place at various restaurants.
These protests were generally well-organized and led by Black activists, but some racial tension still existed in the city. Some public establishments are still closed to African Americans and other minorities, including those located in the heart of the city’s affluent, mixed-race neighborhoods.
However, with the passage of the Civil Rights Act in 1957, the city became one of the first major American cities to integrate its lunch counters and many other public places. It was a slow process, but one that ultimately succeeded in eliminating segregation.
